Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger Hosts State of the University Address
Record breaking enrollment, new projects on campus, and recognition from some of the nations top ranking publications are just a few of the highlights for Binghamton University in 2024.
Binghamton University celebrated a list of accomplishments from 2024 this year, starting with another year seeing record enrollment and applications from students.
Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger said, "This allows us to increase our already impressive selectivity in the admissions process, accepting just 39% of the undergraduate first year applications we received. Compare that to our peers in the SUNY system. That's much more selective than Stony Brook, 49% or the University of Buffalo, 69%."
This could be due to being ranked in several publications as a top university in the country and state, ranking in Forbes top 10 public ivy schools, ranking first for SUNY schools, top 20 for career placement in public schools, and top 100 for shaping future leaders.
Some things that could be a factor in higher enrollment could be the continued commitment to innovation in the battery industry with New Energy New York(NENY), any of the 33 members of faculty and staff that rank within the top 2% in their field, or the new working partnerships with BAE Systems and Guthrie.
"Accomplishments like this list is the consistency and the steadiness of our university. We're taking steps every day to make Binghamton bigger and better," said Stenger.
The university was also able to raise over $261 million dollars for the university through the Excelerate campaign, to fund scholarships, research grants, new projects on and off campus, and other sectors within the university.
Stenger says, "Right now we've got some huge projects going to the finish line. We're building a new dormitory for 400 students. We're building a new classroom with 1900 seats in the class, in a lecture hall, a classroom building where we're renovating our east gym. We're we're spending a ton of it up for this presentation. We're spending $575 million on projects over the next five years. "
Stenger hopes that his work has helped lay the foundation for the next president to come in, and continue building up Binghamton University.
Stenger says, "I want to make sure that every day that I come to work, I work harder that day than I did the day before. Because the last day when that person comes through my office door and I shake their hand and I say, let me know if you need any help. Good luck, and see you later. "
