Union-Endicott High School Schools Students Perform 'La Befana' at Elementary Schools
Students from the Union-Endicott High School Italian Club visited elementary schools across the district to perform a skit based on the popular Italian folklore "La Befana" today.
Italian Club member Faith Castoro said it is important to introduce cultural lessons at a young age.
"If you can teach kids about other cultures while they're young, they're more likely as they grow up to be more interested to learn about other cultures, to travel. And, I think that's very beneficial for all Americans," she said.
The club visited four schools: Ann McGuinness, Charles Johnson, Thomas Watson, and George Johnson Elementary. Castoro said her favorite part of the day was interacting with the students.
"When the students said in this school that their teachers had been bad. At every other school, they said that they were good. And I thought that was really funny," Castoro said.
Italian teacher Amalia Roma-Circensi said activities like this are important because they allow kids to expand their imaginations.
"To younger kids, everything is real. This is a magic room. This really flies on the night of January 5th and the morning of January 6th," Roma-Circensi said.
Roma-Circensi said she hoped the students took away an important lesson about kindness.
"I think everything comes down to being kind. If you are kind, if you are good to yourself with others, you will get rewards," said Roma-Circensi.
A lesson in culture and kindness, mixed with a little magic — that's what students shared with their younger peers today.
