Rock Climbing Facility The Pad Climbing Opens Sunday in Vestal
After months of construction, the Pad Climbing on Vestal Road will be ready to be scaled by the public this Sunday.
Founders Yishai and Kristin Horowitz are hoping to bring his love of rock climbing to New York all the way from California.
"Our original climbing gym started with, I went to, school in San Luis Obispo, California, and there was not really a climbing gym there that we liked. So we got together with some friends and we built a little climbing wall and a self storage unit, actually," Yishai said.
A passion he kept with 2 full scale locations in the state, until a visit to the Southern Tier inspired a new location on the other side of the US.
"I was back here a few years ago, with my wife for a family reunion. Her whole family is from and most of them still live here. And we thought that this would be a pretty incredible spot to have a climbing gym. And we felt there was a real community need," Yishai said.
A need he hopes is filled by the new 16,000 square foot facility, which has over 11,000 feet of climbing space.
From the lower difficulty bouldering wall, a wall Clint Sanderson, Operations Manager of the location, recommends for beginners.
"It's low to the ground. It requires a least amount of gear. All you need is shoes and chalk," Sanderson said.
To harder courses that require a harness and a partner to climb, with walls reaching 42 feet high.
The gym will be open for members 24/7, with the rope walls being open from 11 AM to 12 PM.
An after school program for K-12 students having their own teams and meeting multiple times a week is also in the works.
