Waverly Central School District Prepares To Open New Gym This Weekend
A 40-million dollar multi-year project, that is what is going on at Waverly Central School District in Tioga County. The project featuring many things such as air-conditioning installation, softball and baseball field renovations, as well as new renovations to the high school STEM facility. However the biggest project of a new gymnasium is set to open up this weekend.
The overall project will have 97 percent of the total cost be reimbursed by the state. For Waverly athletics; the new gym will feature new locker rooms, showers. Plus spectators will notice major differences to the overall structure of the gym including three new scoreboards, a raised roof to make it more convenient for the Wolverines volleyball program, and a indoor track on the top part of the gym. Superintendent of the district Dr. Eric Knolles spoke on how this project will now benefit students both academically and athletically.
"We do expect that it'll help our athletic programs as they grow with our training centers and all the rest of it," said Knolles. "The biggest piece is just health and wellness, having a kid who's smart, athletic, socially responsible, and this is a part of that".
Four games are slated for Saturday in the new gym as both the JV and Varsity teams for both girls and boys basketball will ring in the new year in the new gym taking on Sidney. Knolles says there is no better way to go into 2025 the having the programs return home for their first home game of the season.
"We've been on the road for a year now doing practices and stuff" said Knolles. "So it's just been great to bring everybody back. And for us it's a new year and it's a chance to get everybody together".
