As New Year's approaches, many grocery stores have seen a surge in shoppers, and one of them is Wegmans.

According to service area manager Nicole Freeman, the store is particularly busy during this time of the year.

"This time of year, we're really just hoping that families are getting together, and we can be there to help provide incredible meals for all of our customers and help with any busy celebrations that we might be helping our customers celebrate," Freeman said.

Many shoppers were out picking up items for their loved ones. One such shopper, Judy Martinek, came all the way from Wisconsin to visit her daughter. Martinek, who was at the store to pick out snacks for her great-grandchildren, said she liked the unique selection Wegmans offers compared to stores in her hometown.

"They have a lot more stuff that seems like different items. That's where I like when I'm here out in New York," Martinek said.

Sadie Sudduth and Christina Sauger, who also came from Florida also to visit family, said that the holidays are a time they always look forward to.

"So [Sadie] likes visiting her grandparents and her cousins. So it's really special for us to come here," Sauger said.

For Freeland, interacting with customers like these is one of the most rewarding parts of her job during the holiday season.

"It's just how happy our customers are, we're really able to find all of those special things that you might not be able to find in other local retailers. And just being able to help point our customers in the right direction is awesome. It's very fulfilling being able to be there to help them," Freeman said.

As the new year draws near, it’s these meaningful connections between family, friends, and communities that truly make the season special.
