Teacher of the Week: Lori Fisher
Lori Fisher has worked as the school counselor at Floyd Bell Elementary School for seven years, following her start in the Sidney school district.
She said her biggest inspiration to pursue a counseling career was her high school counselor.
"My school counselor really helped walk me through the college application process and helped me apply to schools. It was just integral and really made a difference in terms of, you know, my future education in college. I was so thankful for him and thought that's what I wanted to do for kids. I want to be that person who makes a difference," said Fisher.
Fisher does all of the typical duties of a school counselor but her position is unique because she gets a chance to expand into the classroom and teach kids a social and emotional curriculum.
Fisher said, "I think they have a much deeper understanding of what my role is as a school counselor because they see what I'm teaching. I'm teaching about feelings, problem-solving, and, you know, making our best choices. So they know who I am. I'm not a stranger that you just come to my office and talk to me. "
Fisher says expanding her impact beyond her office will go a long way in helping the kids grow and become the best versions of themselves as they navigate their academic journey.
"It feels wonderful. I love it. I can't imagine having any other job anywhere else. I'm excited to come to work every day. I'm excited to have an impact on these young children, to help them learn these skills that they need to be future-ready and they need to be successful. It's just a complete joy," said Fisher.
