Local nonprofit Play It Forward held a Christmas Cookie 5k Run and Walk at the Rail Trail in Vestal today to raise funds for its cause.

The event featured Christmas caroling, refreshments, an awards ceremony, and a Christmas celebration at Waterman's Cafe afterward.

A total of 53 participants took part in the race, raising over $600 in donations.

Play It Forward was founded by Ray Russell, who refurbishes donated instruments and gives them to aspiring young musicians.

"What we're trying to do is just come up with different ways, unique ways, social gatherings and so forth, that are a mechanism to raise some of these funds and help them out," race director Mark Mushalla said. "It gives people of all backgrounds and ages an opportunity to get together and enjoy each other's camaraderie and just get out and have a good time."
