Parents Get the Chance to Learn from Their Kids at Ann G. McGuinness Elementary School
Over in the Village of Endicott, parents got the chance to learn with their kids with a special holiday twist.
First graders at Ann G. McGuinness listened to the book Christmas spirit to improve their reading comprehension skills.
Students also taught their families a phonics-based game to bring some of the classroom lessons to their loved ones. To finish off the day, students got to make edible snowman crafts with their parents.
"We think about families and parents as being each child's first teacher. And I know parents are very busy. I'm a parent myself. It's hard to try to fit it all in. So we thought, let's try to show them how it could be as easy as sitting at home during a read-aloud or sharing a bedtime story and the kind of little bits that could be added to hopefully what's already happening at home, just to kind of extend that learning," First Grade Teacher at Ann G. McGuinness Alison Loy said. "So their child is, you know, putting the skills that they're learning in the classroom into real-world situations."
