As Binghamton City Council is considering the good cause eviction proposal, city of Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham is encouraging the council to take a pause on the proposal before coming to a decision.

Kraham says he is concerned that bringing New York City-style housing regulations, regarding aspects like rent control, to Binghamton would backfire.

The Good Cause Eviction proposal brings tenants protection from unjustified evictions and the ability to challenge rent hikes more than 10% or 5% plus the consumer price index.

The City of Binghamton mayor also stated the proposal could limit landlords from making fair rents or remove lease violators, possibly leading to smaller landlords not wanting to invest in the area.

"By limiting landlords ability to set fair market rents or remove tenants who violate lease agreements. The law discourages investment in rental properties. It's exact opposite of what Binghamton needs," Kraham said. "We desperately need more folks looking to buy rental properties, fix them up and making them available to middle-income families and residents who are struggling to find housing right now. But if these regulations go into effect, many landlords, particularly small ones, may very well decide that it's no longer worth the risk to operate in this market environment."

Binghamton City Council is scheduled to vote on the legislation at tomorrow night's city council meeting.
