For those who have a real Christmas tree in your home for this holiday season, there is an opportunity to have it recycled after the holidays are over.

The Broome County Division of Solid Waste Management is offering free tree recycling options for this holiday season. Trees dropped at the Landfill will be chipped and composted on Landfill property. This compost will then be made available for free to residents next spring for landscaping needs.

Trees that are dropped the NYSDEC location in Kirkwood will be collected and chipped as well, and will be used along hiking trails in parks. No matter where you drop your tree off, please make sure all lights, tinsel, ornaments, and other decorations are removed before dropping off the tree.

Real trees can be brought to the following locations at the following times from December 26th to January 31st:

Broome County Landfill, 286 Knapp Road

  • Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.; Saturday, 7 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

NYSDEC, 1679 Route 11, Kirkwood

Grippen Park is not a drop-off location this season. Fake/plastic trees can be brought to the county landfill for disposal as regular garbage.
