Last Saturday Vestal Middle School students not only won the yearly Mathalon, a team and individual based math competition, they made several records for it.

The Vestal Middle School Green Team has three students: Angela Ma, Bojun Zhang, and Allison Qiang, all tied for first place.

Per tiebreaker rules, Angela Ma took the spot, with the other two students having an honorable mention.

"I was really nervous in the round, but just, like, keep going, just just keep going. Question after question, operation after operation. Because in the end, it will all pay off for all the work that you did. And then, when when they announced our names, I was so, so shocked," Ma said.

In the over 20 year history of the event, no students have tied for first place.

It was Coach and Math Teacher Kevin Gaydorus' first year teaching the class and participating in the event.

"Feels pretty crazy, and I'm super proud of my students. I can't believe that, they're all tied for first and the individual around. I know we practiced it plenty, like, 1 to 2 times a week. So when they got the first place award, all three of them, I was pretty ecstatic," Gaydorus said.

Excitement the students are looking forward to carrying into next year's event.
