Department of Public Arts Completes Latest Mural on the Southside
The latest mural from the Department of Public Art(DPA) is located in the Southside Commons at 45 South Washington Street.
It took four local artists around two weeks to complete.
DPA Co-founder Mark Bowers said, "This was a slightly underused space, and we talked with and worked with the southside neighborhood assembly, which is a citizens group. We came up with the idea for some murals that would lend themselves to having a selfie taken in front of them to try and bring some more foot traffic and interest to this public space here on the south side. "
It spans approximately 60 by 10 feet and features four eye-catching panels depicting flowers, balloons, butterfly wings, and ice cream cones.
One of the artists said she loves being able to bring new life to older buildings.
Local artist AmArA*jK said, "Some of them are quite sleek looking, but suddenly you add an artist's idea and paint to it and it becomes something transcendent and something that creates a better quality of life for everyone around."
While others enjoy leaving an impression that may go on to inspire others.
Local Artist Ann Pellegrino said, "I love it when you see some artwork that might give you, like, a happy surprise in your day. Something that you weren't expecting to see. Just give you a little moment of joy, a little bit of happiness, something to make you smile. And maybe that kind of stays with you and makes you want to create something of your own "
This mural is the DPA’s 29th project completed since 2012, and all of the murals are supported by grant funding and ideas from local artists.
