Team of the Week: SUNY Broome Volleyball
The SUNY Broome Volleyball team, our latest Amphenol Aerospace Team of the Week, has been a nationally renowned squad over the last decade or so, but in recent memory has come just short of nationals...this year, the Hornets look to break through.
It's been a little over two weeks since the SUNY Broome volleyball team has commenced practice and this year, they're under new leadership.
"Without her, we wouldn't have a team," said sophomore Kate Spencer. "We wouldn't have anybody to be on this team. And she actually texted me to come back and play because I wasn't going to come back to play. Personally, I think she's going to be an amazing coach. She's definitely shaped us very well"
Head Coach Kacy Boburka enters her first year as the bench boss for the Hornets and she's happy with what she's seen so far.
"We've been really lucky this year, all the girls are very positive, happy," Boburka said. "We seem to be gelling really well, which doesn't usually happen this fast."
The Hornets squad returns just two players from a year ago...Kate Spencer and Ayshah Almashni.
"I like stepping up to the position and it's fun hanging out the girls and getting to know them and kind of showing them the ropes in a way that like everyone can have fun," Almashni said. "But you can still have a productive season"
And that's been a common theme with this year's team--positivity and optimism.
"A lot of us started off really strong, although we haven't known each other very long," said freshman Amariah Argro. "We actually have a really good bond."
So without getting ahead of themselves, Broome knows their end goal is to make it back to Nationals, a place, assistant coach Kylee Cunningham went as a player three years ago.
"It was a really fun experience," Cunningham said. "So I think that that is something that I would love to go back and see as a coach... I think that we definitely have the potential to go."
A place they've been scratching at lately.
"We've been one game away from going to Nationals one year, literally losing by two points," Boburka said about her times as an assistant coach.
But win or lose, the SUNY Broome Volleyball team feels good with where they're at and will look to keep growing under new leadership.
"I want every girl to leave their last game on this court feeling fulfilled," Almashni said.
The Hornets first home game is this Friday against Monroe College-Bronx at 4:30 pm.
