100 Years Ago: August 23, 2024
100 Years Ago is brought to you by Broome Recycles.
100 years ago today, 40 acres of farmland just north of Hillcrest, have been purchased and will be developed for housing. The old farm was the birthplace of John Hull, Jr., the Binghamton cigar manufacturer.
Owners of the Binghamton Tallow Company on Eldredge Street have been ordered to clean up their plant and eliminate odors that have been annoying residents in the area.
A gang war was developing last night at the C.F. Johnson Playground, between young men from Johnson City and Binghamton’s First Ward. The boys scattered when police arrived.
Finally, thieves broke into a restaurant at Water and Henry Streets last night. They stole cigarettes, chewing gum and 60 pennies from the cash register. Detectives believe it was the work of young boys again.
And that was the news 100 years ago.
