#8 on Fox 40's Top 40: Matt Gallagher
Coming in at number eight is Maine-Endwell's own Matt Gallagher.
Gallagher, a native of New York, came to the Southern Tier after a Hall of Fame Wrestling career at Wagner and initially was an assistant for Johnson City's wrestling team. Matt bounced back between here and Albany before taking M-E's varsity wrestling coach job in 1993, a position he still occupies today.
In 2004, Maine-Endwell won their football program's first State Championship, led by Jack Touhey. At that time, Coach Gallagher was working in M-E's football system and by 2008, the varsity reigns were handed off to him.
Gallagher's first two years as head coach produced Section IV runner-up stops to Corning West and Johnson City and in 2010, Coach hoisted his first Section Title. The Spartans lost in the quarterfinals by 26 points.
One season later, however, Maine-Endwell was revamped. Coach Gallagher and co. stunned the reigning state champs, Aquinas, 19-16 in the semifinals before winning the state title game over Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake.
That's when Maine-Endwell went from a good program to a household name in the State. The Spartans went on to win State Championships each of the next three years, making Gallagher's total four by the end of 2014. Along that stretch, Maine-Endwell won 62 straight games, still the longest streak for any New York program.
The Spartans lost in the state semis in 2015 but returned to form after the pandemic. In 2021, M-E went streaking again, winning their first section chip since 2015 and running their way to another state title. The Spartans repeated in 2022 and went on a 34-game winning streak that wrapped up with a state finalist finish last season. Gallagher's all-time record at Maine-Endwell is 152-25.
For his ability to turn a good Maine-Endwell team into the most dominant squad in the state over a four-year stretch and then come back again in 2021 and go on a similar run, consistently get kids recruited to the college level both in football and in wrestling, coach Matt Gallagher comes in at number eight on Fox 40's Top 40.
