#33 on Fox 40's Top 40: Vickie Sax
Number 33 is Vestal's Vickie Sax! Sax played high school field hockey and softball at Vestal, taking her talents to the Big 10's Iowa to continue her athletic career. Vickie's legacy as a Hawkeye still lives on, scoring the most field hockey goals in a single Big 10 Tournament game with four.
After graduating, Sax began coaching at Vestal, first for her sister, Kelley's team, and then for the VHS softball and field hockey programs, winning Section IV Championships in both.
Then, Sax took a head coaching position at Mansfield University to coach field Hockey. Vickie spent two years at the Pennsylvania school before taking over for Colgate's Division I softball program. As the head honcho for the Red Raiders, Sax produced unprecedented success, winning three Patriot League Coach of the Year Honors and winning the conference's postseason tournament three times as well.
Sax left the program as its winningest coach in 2010.
After leaving the college ranks, Sax returned to Section IV and made her way back to Vestal to once again coach field hockey and softball. On the softball diamond, Vestal has won two Section IV Championships since taking over in 2022, advancing to the state final four both years. In Field Hockey, Vickie took over in 2012 and has made it to the State Title game three times, coming off back-to-back New York State Class B Championships and advancing a multitude of her players to the college ranks.
For her success as a player in both high school and college, but moreso for her historic tenure at Colgate and now for reviving Vestal's softball and field hockey programs, creating an environment and program that runs far deeper than just the Varsity team while demanding and pushing coverage of female athletics in the Southern Tier. Vickie Sax comes in at number 33 on Fox 40's Top 40 Most Impactful Sports Figures sponsored by UHS Sports Medicine and UHS Orthopedics.
