Crews respond to house fire in Owego
Multiple crews are on the scene of a house fire in Owego. The call came in around quarter four this afternoon for a structure fire at 131 George Street.
When crews arrived, they began battling a blaze on the back of the house.
A Fox40 crew on the scene says the fire was out in within thirty minutes. Owego, Apalachin, West Corners, Newark Valley and Campville Fire were all on the scene.
Owego Fire Captain Mike Hopkins described the scene his men responded to.
"Initially it was very smoky, very hot until we were able to get a hole cut into the roof to vent out some of the heat and gasses, and that made it a little more tolerable on the second floor," Hopkins said. "But the first crews into the building reported very high heat and very dense smoke."
The family is safe and being assisted by the Red Cross.
