Family Violence Prevention Council holds stalking awareness training
The Family Violence Prevention Council hosted a training today for what they say is an often misunderstood crime: stalking.
The council partnered with the Stalking Prevention Awareness Resource Center based in DC for today's training of social workers, caseworkers and law enforcement, among other professions.
They learned how to identify red flags, tactics used by offenders, various stalking behaviors and how to address them.
"A lot of what they're talking about today is the context that which stalking occurs, because from an outsider, it could be coincidence," explained Kristin Beylo, coordinator for Family Violence Prevention Council. "It could be that, you know, you're being too emotional. Your perspective is important. I think that's what we're learning today. And to trust when a victim says, 'Oh, this isn't right, I feel unsafe' and then using the skills reminder today to move it forward."
SPARC also discussed how to help victims through every step of the process and the aftermath.
Organizers said it takes bravery for victims to come forward and we should do our best to support them.
