The third annual art contest by the Family Violence Prevention Council of Broome County has begun.

The theme for this year's contest is Be the Light, and it was chosen to represent a contestant's ability to bring hope, inspiration, and positivity to challenging and hard times. It is open to all Broome County youth pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. Submissions can be done either solely or in small groups. The deadline to submit and vote is February 29th.

Adults of contestants can find valuable resources, such as inspirational graphics, conversation guides, and educational resources here.

Once a project is submitted, it can be voted on by community members. The sooner a project is submitted, the more time it has to be voted on. Winners will be announced via Facebook live on March 18th at 9 a.m. Contestants must have their guardian/caregiver's permission to enter. The winner will have their work displayed on a billboard courtesy of Park Outdoor for one week in April. The second and third-place winners can select an art kit from Michael's for $50 and $25 respectively.

All submissions must have a title, be two-dimensional, and submitted through a photograph or JPEG.

The following mediums are accepted:

  • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
  • Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal
  • Collages
  • Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints
  • Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums, such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.
