A typical fair brings many things; souvenirs, carnival rides, and some delicious smelling food.

However at the Afton fair this year for the first time they honored first responders from Delaware, Otsego, Chenango, and Broome counties for their devotion to keeping the Southern Tier safe.

Organizer of the event Terry Potter says how he acknowledges the grind and effort these individuals put in every day.

"I just know through the years that the commitment and number of hours that go into their training and their certifications and following regulations," said Potter. "It truly is a commitment."

Also at the event was Assemblyman Joe Angelino who presented the awards alongside Potter. Angelino, a retired police officer of 34 years and a current volunteer firefighter says it is an honor to give recognition to people he has worked alongside him over the years.

"To recognize the best of the best, they are all doing something special and to be nominated and get an award that is extra special," said Angelino. "I am one of them and maybe that is why I am here, because they know that I am also going through the same struggles and sacrifice."

From firefighters, to EMTs, to members of law enforcement; members of the four counties were recognized at the grandstand for their efforts and Angelino hopes to continue that here at the Afton fair.

"These are unsung heroes in every community and there's so few and far in between," said Angelino. "We need everybody and it is so right and good to recognize them.
