Area Students Send Letters to Veterans
Students from Johnson City Elementary, Chenango Forks Elementary, Broome County Catholic Schools and CFJ Elementary wrote letters that are going to be delivered to veterans tomorrow at Oxford Veterans Home.
Fifth grade teacher, Sarah Eisele who organized the event, came up with idea amidst the pandemic in 2020 with her husband who is a member the Nam Knights Motorcycle Club.
“Why not try to get as many letters, cards, thank yous to the veterans in Oxford Veterans Home from local school districts? So that year we ended up with almost one thousand letters and this we have over a thousand letters from local school districts.”
The motorcycle club works to honor military and police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. They also promote community awareness. Tomorrow, a line of motorcycles will go to the home and deliver the letters.
Brain Weidman, the president of the Liberty chapter says, "Seeing the support of the community is very important so I think they’re looking forward to it and will enjoy it very much.”
Eisele hopes the initiative continues to grow, involving more students across the area.
“So our goal is to involve even more school districts next year and to maybe possibly two thousand letters; we want to double our goal.”
If you want to honor veterans outside of Veterans Day, Weidman says you can wear red on Fridays.
