The New York Mets have seen a number of their key players come through Binghamton in the last few years including the likes of Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto. Now the Mets next potential star is here in Binghamton looking to prepare himself for the show.

Shortstop Ronny Mauricio is the third ranked prospect in the Mets organization and the 55th ranked prospect in all of Major League Baseball. In 100 games with the Brooklyn Cyclones this season, the 20-year-old belted 19 homeruns and drove in 63 RBI. Since the Mets signed Mauricio as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2017, the expectations have been sky high, scouts have raved about all the tools he possesses on offense and defense. Massive expectations from the organization and fans could be considered a lot of pressure for some prospects, not for Ronny.

“I think it’s the opposite of pressure, I welcome it,” says Mauricio. “It pushes me even harder to not only live up to the hype, but to live up to the player I know I can be.”

So far Mauricio has only played 4 games at the Double-A level with the Rumble Ponies but he already has 6 hits in just 16 at-bats. To be working through the system this quickly is no small feat. Mauricio is the youngest player on the Rumble Ponies by almost 2 years and he’s more than 2 years younger than anyone else on the Triple-A Syracuse Mets. Mauricio says he knows he’s a great ball player but that he must continue to refine his game to be ready for the next level.

“There’s always a lot of things I can work on, but I’m getting better everyday,” says Mauricio. “My focus is continuing to control my emotions and my approach and continue with my work ethic. I want to stick with what I’m doing now because I think I’m on a good path.”
