Coming out of the All-Star break the New York Mets added some reinforcements to their Double-A affiliate here in Binghamton in the form of one of the MLB's top 75 prospects.

After appearing in the 2021 MLB Futures Game at Coors Field during All-Star weekend, third baseman Brett Baty got the call up from High-A Brooklyn to the Rumble Ponies. Taken 12th overall in the 2019 MLB Draft, the 21-year-old is the Mets 4th ranked prospect, and the 73rd ranked prospect in all of baseball. Baty and Mets top prospect catcher Francisco Alvarez were the organization’s two representatives in the Futures Game.

“That was awesome just getting to go play with all those talented guys in Denver,” says Baty. “Getting to go with Alvarez was really fun. Just taking batting practice on that field it was an awesome atmosphere, the fans were great. My family got to come out and watch me play so it was just a dream come true really.”

In 51 games with the Cyclones this season, Baty had a .309 batting average with 7 homeruns and 34 RBIs. Playing in his first series in Binghamton, he says he’s looking to get his game ready to play at the next level.

“Probably just defensively working on my quickness over there at third base and then reading the ball in the outfield, trying to get jumps on the ball out there,” says Baty. “Feel like my arm strength can play over at third base, just trying to work on reading the hops and have quicker feet... The game is a lot faster than High-A. I’m trying to see the ball a little bit slower and pick it up a little bit earlier. Just the guys are a little bit stronger and a little bit faster, so the game is speeding up a little bit but hopefully I’m ready for it.”

Only a couple days in to his temporary home of Binghamton, Baty has gotten to explore a bit and likes what he has seen.

“It’s a little bit slower than the actual New York City, a little slower than Brooklyn,” says Baty. “But the people seem great. One of my teammates Jake Mangum took me around the city a little bit. It’s very beautiful, very scenic. Got to see the rivers, got to see the mountains, it’s just a very good spot to be.”
