New Life For The Decker Mansion... And It's Not Student Housing
Ten months after a student housing project at the Decker (or Davidge) Mansion sparked outrage in the west side community, new plans are emerging for the historic Binghamton landmark.
At a board meeting on Wednesday, the Broome County IDA (The Agency) approved a loan application of $360,000 from Davidge Holdings LLC to help purchase the iconic yellow building at 31 Front Street.
Davidge Holdings is a real estate holdings company for Chianis & Anderson Architects, a firm currently located at 84 Court Street. The Agency's Senior Deputy Director of Operations, Tom Gray explained to the rest of the board that Chianis & Anderson want to buy the mansion and move their offices there.
"The company has outgrown it's leased space at 84 Court Street and is searching for a larger facility able to accommodate current and future growth," says Gray, reading from the loan application.
The application goes on to say that the architecture firm, founded in 2001, has "decided to make a permanent investment in the community" by purchasing 31 Front Street.
The company cites the location, increased space, more parking, and the fact that the Davidge Mansion is a recognizable landmark as their reasons for wanting the property.
Board member Rich Bucci says he believes this is the right fit for the building, which can act as an "anchor property" for that block of Front Street. Over the past year, the public has been very vocal about not wanting more housing in that space, voicing their opposition at public hearings held by the city and on social media. Bucci says the business, which plans on having 21 full time positions in that location, is "an ideal use of the property."
Todd Anderson, founding partner of Chianis & Anderson, tells Fox 40 the business has a few other applications out there right now for additional help in acquiring the building, so he does not wish to go into detail on the project until everything is solidified. However, Anderson did say he's very excited about the possibility of moving operations into the property.
