The boyfriend of 16-year-old Amelia Wakefield has been charged with murder in her death. 18-year-old Cody Coleman was charged Friday afternoon when a grand jury indictment was unsealed in Chenango County Court.

The Chenango County Sheriff's office says Wakefield was deceased from a gunshot wound when they arrived at the house at 136 Water Street in the Town of Smithville on May 3rd. The Chenango County District Attorney says Coleman used a 16 gauge shotgun to kill the Oxford high school junior.

Wakefield's classmates and teachers have been wearing purple ribbons in her memory. Purple stands as a symbol against domestic violence. In the days after her death, the school and community struggled to come to terms with what happened. The teen is remembered as having an infectious laugh and always trying to make others smile.

Coleman has been charged with murder in the 2nd degree and criminal possession of a weapon. He has been sent back to the Chenango County jail with no bail. Coleman has been in the Chenango County Jail since May 7th, when he was arrested on a bench warrant from Smithville Town Court.
