The New York State Department of Transportation announced a $1.1 million dollar safety enhancement construction project for Route 434 on Friday.
The project will improve pedestrian safety and mobility on Vestal Parkway between Binghamton University and Main Street in the town of Vestal.
According to NYSDOT, sidewalks will be installed to eight locations where none currently exist.
Sidewalks and sidewalk connections will be built at the following locations:
- At Main Street near Memorial Park
- At Airborne Avenue
- At African Road
- At Sycamore Street/Rano Boulevard
- In front of Town Square Mall
- Between Jensen Road and the Target entrance
- Between Martha Road and Bunn Hill Road
- At Glenn G. Bartle Drive (Binghamton University entrance)
“Pedestrian improvements along Route 434 and throughout New York State allow people to safely walk to their destinations, cutting down on carbon emissions and boosting their personal health,” said Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul. “These new sidewalks complement many of the infrastructure additions that we're making across the region that help keep the Southern Tier Soaring.”
Construction will begin in May and is expected to be complete by the fall.
NYSDOT said that construction will not take place during the 2019 summer concert series or on federal holiday between May and November.
“The safety of our residents is extremely important, especially in a highly traveled area like the Vestal Parkway. New sidewalks will help provide safe access for county residents, including Binghamton University students, to many businesses in the area," said Jason Garnar, Broome County Executive.
