A night of science, competition, learning and fun for students at Chenango Valley Thursday night.

The night kicked off with the 9th annual 'Cardboard Boat Races' at the middle school.

Hundreds of students in groups competing the boats they made out of cardboard and duct tape.

"The students are learning about buoyancy and physics in their science classes and the object is to create a boat made out of cardboard and duct tape and go down the pool and back in the shortest amount of time," said Eric Attleson, CV Middle School Principal.

Dozens of boats carrying at least one student competed in the race.

"Students love it. It’s a great time. It’s almost like organized chaos in the pool," said Attleson. "Students are very supportive of one another. Hopefully all the boats will make it from one end to the other but sometimes they just don’t make it."

Not only did students compete their boats for fastest time, boats could also win in categories including 'most school spirited' and 'most creative.'

According to Attleson, the fastest boat made it down the pool and back in 42 seconds.

Following the boat race, a district-wide STEAM Night was held offering students a wide-range of hands-on activities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.
