Broome Republicans have nominated a local attorney to challenge Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo in the November election.

Dorolla Nixon, 37, announced his candidacy for the state assembly's 123rd district Friday afternoon.

Nixon, of Binghamton, is a graduate of Cornell University, and Rutgers University School of Law. He's an attorney with Lachman & Gorton in Endicott, and volunteers with several local organizations.

Nixon has accused Lupardo of being ineffective during her 12 years serving the assembly -- and says he believes that not being a career politician will be give him an advantage in the election.

"One of the things we desperately need in Albany is new leadership. We're all aware that albany has a corruption culture, and we need change," Nixon said.

"You get change from new leaders."

Lupardo said she's confident in her record.

"I've lived in this community for 40 years. I've practically devoted my entire professional career to helping this area out," Lupardo said. "I think we're starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel."

It will be Lupardo's seventh term in office, if reelected.
