Safe Sleeping to Keep Babies Alive
Over the last 6 years in Broome County, 49 babies died from preventable causes before their first birthday.
That's why Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network is emphasizing safe sleeping conditions for babies by setting up model cribs throughout Broome County.
Safe sleeping tips include not having any blankets or stuffed animals in the crib with the babies. Babies must sleep alone and parents should never sleep with babies in an adult bed.
Sharon Chesna, Executive Director of Mothers and Babies said, "We know that if we can help parents understand how important it is to put that baby to bed alone, and on their back without anything in the crib or other safe environment we know that almost 100% of those deaths could be prevented."
Mothers and Babies will host a community baby shower at the Oakdale Mall on September 26th from 10-2 to educate new parents.
