A Catholic school in Owego could soon be closing.

St. Patrick's school has seen declining enrollment and increased fiscal stress over the past several years. School and parish leaders recently reached out to the Diocese of Rochester to assess the future of the school. A spokesperson for the diocese says it can not continue to subsidize the school to the level it has because of declining enrollment. He says the Bishop is expected to make a decision on the fate of the school in the near future.

"It's a tragedy when you have to close a school and you only do it as a last resort so no one wants to rush the process of doing everything we can to look at the situation and see if there's any alternatives," said Doug Mandelaro, Director of Communications for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester.

A letter sent to parents explained the school actually reached it's fundrasing goal for the year but not it's enrollment goal. The school has 83 students, including pre-k, a drop of 10 from last year.
