A couple of capital projects for Broome County school districts were approved yesterday.

The Vestal Central School District 2024 Capital Improvement Project was passed 287-260 yesterday.

Plans involved in the project include the installation of full air conditioning system at Clayton Avenue Elementary, Vestal Hills Elementary, and Vestal High School; installation of lights on Sammon Field; high school auditorium upgrades; and a replacement of the stadium video scoreboard. The total amount of money spent on the proposed projects is $39,435,000.

Below is a breakdown of how much each portion of the project costs and a short description of the work that will be done:

  • Air conditioning installation: $37,074,278. This will provide and equitable classroom experience for all students, better focus for students and teachers, and year-round use of spaces.
  • Sammon Field light installation: $529,254. Installing lights will allow increased use of the field, especially in the evening hours and provide the marching band a safe location to practice, as band members currently practice in the high school parking lot.
  • High school auditorium upgrades: $1,081,691. Anticipated work to be done includes an upgraded sound system and improved stage lighting.
  • Stadium video scoreboard: $749,777. Work includes the replacement of the stadium scoreboard with a video scoreboard, which will enhance video capabilities during sporting events and special 'nights'.

This does not include a transportation facility proposal.
