Small Fire Forces Cancellation in Johnson City School District
UPDATE: According to the district, the district is working with a cleanup service to ensure the building is smoke-free and safe. Out of an abundance of caution, there will be no school on Tuesday, January 7th. The high school will continue to operate as normal.

Some schools in the Johnson City Central School District will be closed Monday after a small fire.
According to an email from school district officials, due to a small fire that occurred in the elementary-middle school, there will be no school for elementary or middle school students and staff.
According to a release from the Johnson City Fire Department, the call came in just after 5:15 p.m. on Sunday, January 5th for a fire alarm activation at the elementary/middle school.
An active fire was discovered in a second-floor classroom. The department says it was brought under control and confined to the classroom. An odor of smoke was noticeable in nearby hallways, forcing the cancellation of classes on Monday. It was determined that the fire was electrical in nature.
The school was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported.
The high school will operate as normal.
