Binghamton City Council unanimously approved the allocation of American Rescue Plan Act funds to support Broome County's first permanent, deeply affordable housing initiative.

The unanimous decision moves the local non-profit Southern Door Community Land Trust closer to receiving over $386,000 in funding

The location in focus for this initiative is 6 Florence Street in Binghamton, where the non-profit looks to rehabilitate the location into a sustainable and energy-efficient property.

The organization now just needs the City of Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham to sign the grant agreement to receive these funds.

"This is the really the best opportunity to commit to permanent affordable housing in the city of Binghamton, not just because these guys are ready to go to move forward with this project, but having a community land trust within Binghamton is going to create more affordable opportunities in the future," Councilman of Binghamton's Fourth District Nate Hotchkiss said. "It really opens the door for everything that they can do as an organization."
