Local seniors and families can learn how to recognize, respond, and find resources on how to deal with scams at a drive-in event at the Lackawanna Train Station on Wednesday.

Broome County's Family Violence Prevention Council's Elder Abuse Prevention committee is bringing professionals from Binghamton's Regional Office, M&T Bank, and Action for Older persons to provide participants with resources for comprehensive senior needs.

The event will be broadcast through an AM radio station while participants stay in their vehicle to ensure social distancing.

Family Violence Prevention Council Coordinator Kristin Beylo says the pandemic has caused more seniors to fall victim to scams.

"You know, everybody wants to make sure when they receive checks from the government they're doing what needs to be done tax-wise, or whatever," said Beylo. "So people take advantage of those fears."

Wednesday's event starts at 10 am and will include a bag of snacks, information, and promotional items.

You can register by calling Kristin Beylo at 607-778-2626. Registration is open until Monday, September 7.
