A local business is leading New York State with the first hemp dedicated manufacturing, fulfillment, and distribution facility in the Broome County Industrial Park.

Castetter Sustainability Group (CSG) and Modern Marketing Concepts are major partners in Empire Standard, a facility that aims to follow strict standards for hemp extraction.

In January, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo's bill that gave the health department oversight for hemp extracts.

"I certainly had a dream many, many years ago (of this) as a way of revitalizing our community. Our community of farmers. Our community of manufacturers. Our community of processors," said Lupardo.

The FDA registered facility includes an automated order fulfillment system, production line, and printing systems.

CSG CEO Kaelan Castetter says he hopes to export the products not only around the nation, but around the world because of New York's standard for quality agricultural products.

"I think it is critical that it's done here and I think it's critical for consumers and different members of the supply chain to know that it's done here in the Southern Tier in New York," said Castetter.

Broome County Executive Jason Garnar says it's important that the industry is able to create jobs during a pandemic.

"I think it speaks to the great potential the hemp industry has throughout the Southern Tier and United States," said Garnar.

Castetter says about half a million units will be able to be produced within a year.
