In honor of Greek Independence Day, the Greek flag is flying high above Binghamton.

Members of Binghamton's Greek community and Mayor Richard David gathered outside city hall this morning at 11am to raise the Greek flag. During the ceremony, the mayor presented a proclamation to the Greek community as a token of appreciation and friendship from the city of Binghamton.

“It’s very important to the Greek community because it’s a remembrance, just like the revolutionary war and independence day in the US what our ancestors went through to provide us with the freedom that we enjoy today," said Chris Papastrap, Binghamton Councilman of the Fifth District.

Greek won its independence from the Ottoman empire in 1821.The ceremony highlighted Greek history as a symbol of democracy around the world. Greek Independence Day is this Sunday.
