Binghamton Simulator Company Wins Army Contract - 2/8/2010
Flight simulation technology's come a long way since Edwin Link designed the Blue Box in the 1940's.Binghamton Simulator Company says more advances are on the way with the $4.5 million its getting as part of a contract with the Army.
"Many of us have a history back at Link Flight Simulation," said director of of business development for BSC. "We'd like to continue the simulation industry here in the Binghamton area, and this goes a long way towards making sure that it does stay in the area."
BSC is teaming with another company to produce two helicopter training simulators. Those first two have the potential to turn into an order for 21 more -- meaning a BSC would need to double its current staff of 42 workers.
Congressman Maurice Hinchey says this highlights the important future high tech jobs will play in the Southern Tier.
"This particular area probably has as many competent, capable, understanding people as any other area in the country, and so that's one of the great strengths here," said Hinchey. "It's one of the reasons we can work together like this to generate economic growth."
BSC says the new simulators will be similar to this one under development for the Navy, but the NCM3 will be transportable and will also be the first of its kind to provide training to the crew members who are the eyes and ears of army pilots.
"This is the first type of its kind to train the rear air crew members for the many tasks that they have to accomplish in their everyday missions, such as gunnery, hoist operations," said Stanton.
BSC says its first simulator should be ready for delivery to the Army in about 16 months.
